Radian Aerospace, a company that was rumored to work in stealth mode to develop a reusable orbit vehicle, comes up with a spacecraft plan named “Radian One.” The company plans to revolutionize the industry by making spaceflight an ordinary task and making research on low Earth orbit more accessible. With the company going out of its seed funding stage, the projected costs seem high. However, many collaborations between the company and other stakeholders are beginning to form.

What is the spacecraft ‘Radian One’ all about?

A lot of resources are wasted on multiple-stage orbit spacecraft, and they are usually for temporary requirements such as transportation, commercial flights, or satellite ejections. With this new spacecraft, engineers want to allow LEO research to be more accessible and space stations to be more in touch with Earth. As the company claims on its website, the spacecraft is planned to be the world’s first crewed, single-stage to orbit vehicle with runway-like takeoff and landing.

And as the main property of the vehicle goes, the company also say this on their website:

Our fully reusable, aircraft-like configuration requires far less infrastructure than vertical launch systems and can be reflown within 48 hours.

The general plan

The vehicle is projected to be able to “take of subsonically”, “ascent at low G”, and “stay up to 5 days on orbit” according to the “flight profile” on their website. After the mission is completed, the vehicle lands on “any 10000 ft runway” and is ready for another mission in “48 hours” as the company claims. As the project aims to make spaceflight routine and accessible, many other industries can benefit from the idea. If you remember my article on Low Orbit Biomanufacturing titled “Biomanufacturing in Zero Gravity Can Be the New-Age Medicine: Thrilling Report“, making these research zones more accessible would be a huge game-changer in the science communities.

Making space accessible

As you might know, some of the most used things in our everyday life come from inventions that were made for spaceflights. Now, imagine what the scientists can come up with if space becomes more accessible and routine for them. Despite the fact that we still have a lot of time ahead of us for a fully accessible cheap space journey, every step is important and we appreciate every new idea for “reaching the stars” both literally and metaphorically for science.
