Nuclear waste is the number one concern when it comes to nuclear energy. While nuclear energy is a highly effective method of generating energy, disposing of the waste is equally hard. Apart from the radioactive and hazardous nature of the waste, it also has an incredibly long lifespan. This problem is also one of the reasons why nuclear power did not really become a fan-favorite in the eyes of the common citizens. Now, a Swedish Company called “SKB” has received the pass for their new high-tech “final repository for spent nuclear fuel”.

How do they get rid of nuclear waste?

Usually, nuclear waste is classified into categories as low-level, intermediate-level, and high-level. While a high percentage of the waste is in the low-level category, it still requires a good amount of caution in the disposal process. The most well-known and widely agreed solution is “deep geological disposal”, which means that you put the waste on a well-coated protected storage deep underground so that you protect organisms from harm with a natural coating that the soil provides.

What is the company’s plan?

According to the press release, the government has just approved the company’s 19 billion dollars mega-project. As the press release reports, with lots of researchers, experts, and collaboration, the project aims to be the final step in a “long-term solution for energy generation” since most countries want to stop relying on fossil fuels for the generation of energy. While nuclear is another option in that sense, nations need waste repositories for using the technology in an effective amount.

The company says that this new technology has been developed for “40 years” and after it passes the licensing process, it will take “10 years” to build it. The company claims that apart from its environmental benefits, the new system will “create 1500 jobs” too.

“It is a historical decision that enables SKB to dispose of the nuclear waste that our generation has produced. This decision is met with open arms. We are now looking forward to implementing Sweden’s largest environmental protection project,” comments Johan Dasht, SKB’s CEO.

A sustainable future

Nations and private companies all around the world for providing the best solutions for a more sustainable future whether it is nuclear fuels, hydrogen power, electric cars, or whatnot. Last time it was Japan “Hydrogen from Plastic Waste Plan”, now it is Sweden’s “final nuclear waste repository”. While a lot of commercial interest is involved in these innovative investments, it is very good to see a foreshadowing for the greener future we have ahead of us.
