10G Modem Technology: Comcast Announces Mind-Blowing Next-Generation Internet Speed
10G technology seems to be just around the corner while we are still getting used to internet speeds like 1 Gbps and building infrastructure for it. Will we catch the technology fast enough?

Comcast just announced the prototype test for 10G Modem to be successful, which means that the age of multigigabit internet speed may be near. While the upload and download speeds were recorded to be around 4 Gbps, it is hard to think about such speeds when our standard internet providers give us the usual 8 Mbps daytime treatment. As countries were already working on infrastructure for 5G, the big jump of the “G”s confused the community. Just to be clear though.
5G means 5th generation, 10G means 10Gbps and they are not the same thing. Period.

Will the 10G go mainstream?
Though it seems like an evolutionary leap for internet speed, going mainstream requires the company to solve reliability, security, and infrastructure issues. This may be hard while we are newly transitioning to faster internet speed (around 1.5 Gbps) nowadays, so, companies probably will need to invent new ways to drag the infrastructure to the level of technology quickly enough. However, in the future, fast internet speed will surely be a need in the common household with all the everything-to-online transition corporations are doing nowadays. If you also want to learn about technical details, here is the article from TechPowerUp that has all the necessary information.
As a short summary, the technology will be done through the already established connections on the houses. The fast speed will be over a live production network called NFV (Network Function Visualization) and will be using the newest DOCSIS technology (The latest version was released in 2017). With a full-duplex chip, the system will require a hybrid-fiber coaxial network.
Also in the pandemic, an unreasonable conspiracy against 5G was in place. I hope this tragicomic fate of 5G does not reflect onto the 10G technology so that we can get to fast internet speeds quicker. Otherwise, we can see flaming 10G modems and that would not be a good development for the technology. All jokes aside, the tech is pretty interesting, so look at it for yourself if you are proficient in networking technology.

What are some of the concerns about 10G from Comcast?
Most people are in fear of overpromising because usually, internet speeds do not catch up to the promise because of geography, infrastructure problems and many more problematic areas. Therefore, high-speed internet usually does not catch up to the hype. Another point of concern is monopolization. People fear that if a company has the technology and capability to monopolize on the high-speed internet structure, they will be charging a lot, giving data caps, and doing every possible commercial move since they will be the sole control point of the technology.
The third and the last is that even the fast internet promised today, which is usually around 1200-1500 Mbps (1.2 – 1.5 Gbps approximately), is not delivered probably. You usually get a percentage of the promised amount because there are things causing losses in the whole process. This loss of value can even extend when the promised speed is gone wild. As we have seen in the data, the name is 10G, but you can only reliably use 4Gbps usually.

Every one of us wants fast internet, however, there are physical, financial, corporate, and technological limitations to it. While we remove the technological barriers with discoveries and innovations, there are still an infrastructure, financial planning, and corporate plan to go on with it. Therefore, congratulations to the team who developed the technology and good luck to the team that will try to make it mainstream and take it to the commoners’ homes.
