An Indonesian granny threw garbage into the mouth of a hippo

A video of a park visitor with the initials K (56) throwing a garbage from the car into the mouth of a hippo in Taman Safari Indonesia (Indonesia Zoo), Cisarua, Bogor, Indonesia in March 7 went viral on social media.

According to a statement from Taman Safari Indonesia Bogor Public Relations Yulius H Suprihardo, his team had undergone an examination of the hippo named ‘Ari’ and they found blue plastic bottle and lumps of tissue in hippo’s mouth.

As a result of this action, she was threatened with 3 month prison sentence according to Article 302 of the Indonesian Criminal Code regarding Animal Abuse. In an investigation carried out by investigators of Bogor Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim) on March 9, this grandma admitted that she was shocked when she found out that the video of her action went viral on social media.

“I apologize, I didn’t do it deliberately,” said grandma K to local newspaper Kompas.

Investigators in the country are still delving into this case so that the grandma hasn’t been arrested. “It doesn’t allow for detention. (Case law) we are still in process and (perpetrator K may) go home. It is allowed (for Perpetrator K) to apologize, but we are still processing the case,” said Police Chief AKBP Harun to local newspaper Jabar iNews.

The poor hippo ‘Ari’ is now in good condition

The medical team of Taman Safari Indonesia Bogor confirmed that the hippo ‘Ari’ had vomited the garbage and they didn’t find any injuries or abnormalities on Ari’s body. They emphasized that if Ari swallowed the garbage, it would be fatal for him because it took years for plastic to break down.
