New and Exhilarating Self-Farming Farms: How to Harvest With Zero Farmers
Will agriculture get fully autonomous? Self-driving tractors get us one step closer.

John Deere’s self-driving tractor has been the secret milestone amongst all the technological developments this year. As this tractor can plow fields, plant crops, avoid obstacles, and do many more without human intervention, it shows how artificial intelligence can even grow our food for us. And all is controlled by the farmer’s smartphone, the company claims, they do not even need to be anywhere near their farm. However, as John Deere accounts for near half of all farming equipment in the US, the customers of the company have different issues with this innovation.

How will self-farming farms affect the job market?
While in the technological aspect, most claim that this development will bring fully automated farming to the hands of the farmers, the farmers have other complaints. The main issue is that it will not change much since every time there is a problem with the system, they need to take it to the company and wait for the repair queue and lose time. In the meantime, they will need the same manpower to handle everything in the old system until the device is fixed. Most want a right to repair the device and not leave everything to the monopoly of the company. Other than that, efficiency and low costs seem to be the selling point of this high-tech tractor.
Are self-farming farms the future?
As this kind of technology was long-awaited in the interplanetary research scene, the most common use of this technology is that more advanced versions can be used for preparing the environment and putting up farms before people travel to another planet safely. However, in the near future, they will probably just be used for their efficiency, low effort, and cost. People still need to wait for Elon before colonizing Mars with all the self farming farms, or self colonizing colonies, haha! While precision agriculture takes this huge step, another human endeavor gets close to being taken by autonomous technologies. Only time will tell how it will turn out.
