Samsung is well known in the semi-conductor industry and our everyday lives as an established mobile-phone brand. In their press release, they have revealed their new chip for smart and secure payment cards. While biometric cards are nothing new, the all-in-one chip solution is surely something interesting that Samsung has brought to the industry.

What is different about the new Samsung chip on biometric payment cards?

Samsung told that with this new chip, they are combining “a fingerprint sensor, Secure Element and Secure Processor in one chip” and they are empowering them with Samsung’s already existing features such as “fingerprint authentication algorithm and anti-spoofing technology”. This new integrated circuit (IC) is named “S3B512C”. The company says that “the technology is mainly designed for payment cards” but with it being more and more accessible over time, they also mention that it “can also be used in cards that require highly secured authentications such as student or employee identification, membership or building access.”

The new structure of the cards will look like this, according to the Press Release:

Do we really need it?

With the alarming amount of fraud on the web and payments, one may think that biometric features provide a new layer of protection. While for some, this statement becomes true, for some others another layer of security just makes the process longer. As everyone’s need differs, their choice on this matter is up to them as well.

However, in terms of manufacturers, producing only one chip is surely a big improvement instead of many since we are still in a chip shortage nowadays. In the end, it should be appreciated that companies are making efforts that are different than their main areas and helping issues on sustainability and manufacturing like Sony in our previous article (Read: Sony Unveils Its Interesting Plan to Make Electric Cars).

Well, with new security layers and sustainable solutions all around the world, we can see that cybersecurity and sustainability are becoming a key point for most companies. As the writer, I sure hope that the future will be more secure and will be greener than it is today.
