NASA is going for lunar spacesuit.

The agency is seeking industry assist in manufacturing lunar spacesuit for the first trip to the moon’s surface in 2024.

Firstly, the space agency announced that it was looking for industry feedback to help mature the acquisition strategy for the production.

Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or xEMU, is the name of the new suit. Astronauts on the International Space Station will wear the first spacesuits in 2023.

Within the scope of Artemis III mission, they will particularly experience the suits during the first trip to the lunar surface in 2024.

Goal for establishing sustainable missions by 2028

Artemis is the agency’s crewed lunar exploration program.

Therefore, US-based agency aims to establish sustainable missions by 2028 on and around the moon.

Most importantly, the program is considered to take the next giant leap for sending astronauts to Mars.

The spacesuit will contain more cutting-edge technology. As a result, it will permit astronauts to easily walk on the moon’s rocky surface.

NASA is seeking industry assist in manufacturing lunar spacesuit for Moon trip in 2024.

Marshall Smith, director of the Human Lunar Exploration Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington detailed the project.

“You won’t see the bunny hopping and falls like those seen in the Apollo videos.” Smith said.

According to Smith, the suit includes bearings and soft elements so that the wearer can move smoothly.

He added: “With the improvements, astronauts can now open up new possibilities for science and exploration at the moon.”

Spacesuit for missions to distant destinations

NASA wants to receive feedback from industry on how the contractor would facilitate the evolution of the suits.

Smith said: “We have developed a suite of advanced spacesuit components for missions to distant destinations.”

“Now we will take the next step together in the boots of the new exploration suit for Artemis missions,” he added.

The suits are planned to be used for NASA’s Lunar Orbital Platform, Gateway, and future missions to Mars.
