Meta’s Powerful AI Supercomputer Will Be Fully-Built in Mid-2022
Meta adds a new giga-project, the AI Research SuperCluster, to its plans.

In a recent blog post from Meta, it is revealed that the company is building a new-gen AI supercomputer, SuperCluster, for AI research. The AI Research SuperCluster, shortly RSC, will be one of the fastest and most powerful supercomputers in the world. While the plan is to finish the building in mid-2022, it will be interesting to see what the company’s supercomputer will be like when they aim for “models with trillions and trillions of parameters”.
What is the aim of Meta’s new RSC?
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are very computation-demanding in terms of time, resource and difficulty. With the newly developed supercomputer, the researchers aim to train the “largest models” on Earth to develop more advanced “computer vision, NLP, speech recognition” and many other advanced fields. The company also plans to build out “entire new systems” that can work for “real-time voice translation” (especially for work from Augmented Reality with diverse teams – Read: Metaverse Employment Frenzy: 44% Is Willing to Work in the Metaverse) or can work with Augmented Reality projects such as the “Metaverse” we all know.
The potential
Thinking about Meta, the one thing that comes to mind is probably the vast amount of data that they have. With the financial support, the brilliant minds that the tech giant has, and the huge dataset, the project seems like it is almost destined to produce incredible new technology. While the company has already made efforts towards building powerful systems, computers, or software, the new project surely excites most researchers. Again, together with their plan to build the “metaverse”, the company says in the blog post:
Ultimately, the work done with RSC will pave the way toward building technologies for the next major computing platform — the metaverse, where AI-driven applications and products will play an important role.

The timetable
While working in a pandemic, meeting all the deadlines may be hard. However, the company seems to be very confident in its ability to be on time. In their post, the company also addresses the issue of an adaptable computer that can perform well with the new normal of remote work. However, for now, we need to wait for it to be built until mid-2022.
To conclude, it is a new and ambitious project from Meta. It has a lot of potentials to be the new all-powerful computer of the digital world. As the company claims that this will also be used for building our digital universe, the age of the virtual world seems to be near.
