NASA’s SOFIA, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, detected widespread hydration on the lunar surface.

The agency said Clavius Crater, located in the Moon’s southern hemisphere, hosts water molecules, scientifically known as H2O.

NASA’s Artemis plan aims at landing first woman and next man on the Moon by 2024.

“This discovery raises intriguing questions”

The reason why Moon water discovery is important is that it may contribute to sustain a colony on Earth’s only natural satellite.

“This discovery reveals that water might be distributed across the lunar surface and not limited to the cold shadowed places near the lunar poles,” said Paul Hertz, director of the Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “This discovery challenges our understanding of the lunar surface and raises intriguing questions about resources relevant for deep space exploration.”
